CHAPTER 29

Licia

The shop was ready. Licia looked around, admiring the clean floors, the lounge area, the organized desk, and settled into the smell of fresh paint and lemon cleaner. It was beautiful—until a familiar flavor lit up her tongue. It wasn’t just an emotion, but a blend of them that tasted like the sweet craving of desire mixed with a tart desperation, culminating in sour candy.

Glen knocked on her glass door. She unlocked it, having known it was him before he’d come into view. He said he’d be visiting, but she hadn’t expected him to show up so soon. Not that she was surprised.

When they’d met—just a couple of misfit teens trying to find a place to belong—they’d clicked in that school-yard way and stuck by each other. A trusted best friend... at least until his feelings had turned sickly sweet, and he went from dependable to doormat. By the time she’d gone on the run with John, she’d needed to distance herself from Glen for his own good. Hers, too, but until he recovered from his desperate infatuation, she couldn’t be close to him like she once had.

“Hey.” He hesitated, looking at odds with his custom fit suit and careful hairstyle. Now he tasted like uncertainty. She waved him in, getting them both away from the cold.

“I take it you’re here to check up on me.” She ran her fingers along the countertop and waited for him to confirm. He’d want to know what was wrong, but how could she casually blurt that her ability was fucked, and she needed to GTFO of here, but that she couldn’t as long as she had this damn tie to Tarrah that made her feel like a fish on a line?

“When you called, it seemed like something was wr—”

“It’s nothing. GANF and UHP are joining forces and looking to wipe us out. That would bother anyone.” Well, any Abnormal.

Glen pulled out a chair and sat, keeping his distance, but still focused on her. “Wipe you out might be a bit strong. But in general, I agree. I can tell something else is bothering you.”

Blocked from his view by the counter, she ran her fingers over her scars. Maybe she could tell him part of the problem. “I need to leave the city.”

“Why?” He sat forward.

“You of all people shouldn’t be surprised by that. I’m always on the move.”

“Not right after setting up a shop and living in a city for less than a month. Your shortest time was a year in Phoenix.”

One meltingly hot summer in Phoenix was all she could take. He really did know everything about her. See? This was why she had to force space. He was obsessive, and obsessions were dangerous.

How could she explain why she needed to leave NYC without saying too much? She rounded the counter and sat across from Glen.

Where to even begin. She needed to talk about the connection to Tarrah—partially because it just seemed safer than her broken ability. Aubrey’s death, John and Emerson’s rejection.
